Hi, my name is Caitlin and I LOVE coffee. I find it odd writing that because if you asked me 10 years ago if I would ever drink coffee I would have stuck my tongue out at you in disgust. No one in my family drinks coffee. I was raised to be a tea drinker, my mom drinks at least 3 cups a day (what can I say, we are Irish after all). The first few times I tried coffee I got really sick. It was so acidic and my stomach wasn’t used to it. I wanted to love it because it smelled so good! Everything changed when I joined the fire department. Almost everyone there is a coffee addict and there is always a pot on. With all the times we had to standby at the firehouse for natural disasters (hurricanes, snow storms…) it was impossible to keep yourself awake and alert enough to respond to a call at 3am without some kind of help. I knew I hated energy drinks more than coffee so I set out to drink coffee every day until I liked it and it didn’t make me sick. Shockingly, it worked and now, 8 years later I am a full fledged coffee junkie.
I never thought drinking coffee was too much of an issue, I mean 3 cups a day is supposed to be good for you, right? But what I started to notice a few months ago is that when I drank coffee I had some really great energy followed by a really major crash. The crash was so significant I could almost time it to the minute after a while as to when I would need my next cup to make sure I maintained my caffeineated energy. Since I’m someone who is very sensitive to caffeine when it was around 4pm I had to decided whether I wanted to drink more coffee and stay awake until 3am or be so exhausted after 4 that I could barely keep my eyes open. Not only that, I realized that every time I drank coffee my stomach felt off. This was not a way I wanted to keep living. This brought me to find new types of coffee and the two brands I found I love the most are MUDWTR & Four Sigmatic.
Four Sigmatic was the first coffee brand I tried and I gave it a run for about 6 months. Four Sigmatic Coffee is coffee with a mixture of different types of mushrooms (lions mane, cordyceps, chaga, reishi). These different types of mushrooms help with different things like focus, energy and immunity. There are a few things I really liked about Four Sigmatic. I liked that their coffee tasted like coffee to me and I was able to drink it black without anything added to it. I liked that it didn’t give me the jitters like coffee usually did and that I didn’t have a hard crash from it in the middle of the day. I like that they offer decaf as an option if you are someone who can only have decaf coffee. Their coffee is organic, keto, vegan and has 0g of sugar. Even though it was coffee, it only contains half the caffeine as a regular cup of coffee but you would never know. I still felt like I had the same benefits as coffee without having to have a cup of coffee. I bought the instant coffee so I could make it at work without a machine. It still wasn’t your average coffee, but it was darn close and it had added benefits to it that I just couldn’t ignore.
Four Sigmatic also sells mixtures (like tea) with mushrooms and different skin care products that are edible so you really have a wide variety of products to choose from when you go on their website!
The second type of “coffee” I’m really enjoying is called MUD\WTR. It’s not truly coffee, it’s a coffee alternative. The ingredients are Masala Chai, cacao, turmeric, pink Himalayan sea salt, cinnamon, chaga, cordyceps, reishi & lions mane. So, right off the bat this obviously isn’t coffee. Chai tea is a form of black tea, which has a significant amount of caffeine, but not as much as coffee. Black tea has about 15-70mg of caffeine while coffee has 95-200mg. What I do like about this one is all the health benefits. With Four Sigmatic you had to choose which type of mushroom to have in your coffee, but this one incorporates all of them. This “coffee” is also organic, non-gmo, gluten free, and vegan. This drink contains turmeric, which helps reduce inflammation in the body and the chai consists of clove, pepper and ginger which help to regulate digestion. They have also created a creamer made with coconut oil + MCT oil, which is another great digestive and mental benefit. I’ve even heard of people adding it to their coffee to make their coffee more beneficial to their body.
Whatever route you take, have fun with your drinks! It’s important to listen to your body and see how you feel while youre drinking it as well as a few hours later. It’s also important to like what you drink. Have some fun with it and enjoy the journey to finding your perfect coffee!
