Salt Caves seem to be all the rage these days with celebrities and wellness blogs alike praising them. After hearing it mentioned time and time again I decided to do some investigative work. What is a salt cave and what are the benefits? Is it really as amazing as it sounds?
To explore this further I went to Port Jeff Salt Cave in Port Jefferson, NY. This salt cave had great reviews and when I called up the woman I spoke with was very friendly and willing to answer and questions I had.
So what is a salt cave and how is it beneficial to you? A salt cave is a giant room composed of pink Himalayan sea salt. Staying in that room for 45 minutes is said to have the same benefits as spending an entire week on the beach. It has benefits to your immune system, lymphatic system, respiratory system and nervous system. The salt cave can also reduce inflammation in the body, reduce stress, increase energy and promote better sleep. In other countries doctors recommend salt caves on a regular basis for anyone suffering from chronic lung diseases or other chronic conditions. If this sounds like you, a salt cave might be something you want to consider.
Since its been a bad year for me and allergies, I decided to give it a try. When you walk in it’s a beautiful room with tons of natural products you can buy with the pink Himalayan Sea Salt in them. You can even buy a chunk of a stone to keep in your house to purify the air and everywhere you go is a sign that says, “if you have any questions about how this can benefit you, please ask!”
When you walk into the salt cave you must wear socks, because not only is the salt on the walls but there is also broken pieces of salt on the floor. They have zero gravity chairs for you to relax on, and warm blankets in case you get cold. Its dimly lit and cool inside, which is perfect for taking a nap.
When you get settled a voice recording comes on with a small meditation. It takes you through relaxing all your muscles and different breathing techniques for an optimal experience. While the voice was nice at first, I did wish it had stopped after a while. It began walking you through something visual and I lost interest. It worked out in the end because I was able to take a short nap and wake up just in time for the meditation to be ending.
Almost everyone I was in the room with fell asleep. It was deeply relaxing and created a space I didn’t want to leave. I could feel the benefits even while I was in the room. I began taking deeper and fuller breaths. I also slept better in that short nap than I have in a long time. I walked out very happy.
While I can’t speak for any chronic conditions or inflammation, I was able to breath better than I have in months after visiting. I wish this salt cave was closer because I would be a regular visitor.
