Rethinking Cleanses Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine

I have to admit—I love a good cleanse. There’s something deeply satisfying about committing to it, seeing it through, and coming out the other side feeling lighter, clearer, and reset. It brings a sense of accomplishment and reminds me that our bodies are capable of incredible things when we support them intentionally.

That said, not all cleanses are created equal—and more importantly, they are not one-size-fits-all. Just like diets, what works beautifully for one person may leave another feeling depleted. This is where Chinese Medicine offers a thoughtful and balanced perspective on cleansing, one that prioritizes timing, individuality, and nourishment.

Timing Matters: Aligning with the Seasons

In Chinese Medicine, the seasons play a significant role in how we care for our bodies. While cleanses are often popular year-round, they are best suited for the warmer months—spring and summer. During this time, the body is naturally more active and less focused on conserving energy, making it easier to release and detoxify.

Winter, on the other hand, is a time for nourishment and restoration. The body requires warmth and sustenance to stay balanced and resilient. This is the season for soups, broths, and heartier meals. Restricting or eliminating too much during colder months can weaken the system and leave you more susceptible to illness. Instead of removing, winter is a time to add in.

The Importance of Warmth in Digestion

One of the core principles in Chinese Medicine is that digestion thrives on warmth. Many popular cleanses rely heavily on raw juices and smoothies, which are energetically cold and can tax the digestive system.

If you choose to incorporate juices or smoothies into your routine, consider balancing them with warming elements. Adding ingredients like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, or cardamom can help support digestion and keep your system functioning smoothly. Pairing your cleanse with warm beverages—such as ginger or turmeric tea—can also make a significant difference in how your body responds.

Supporting Hormonal Balance with Consistent Nourishment

A well-structured cleanse should never leave you feeling deprived. In fact, for optimal hormonal health, it’s important to nourish your body consistently throughout the day. Eating every 2–3 hours helps regulate blood sugar levels, reduces cravings, and supports overall balance.

If a cleanse leaves you feeling hungry for long stretches, it may not be the right fit. Don’t be afraid to modify—adding a small amount of protein or a nourishing snack can make the experience more sustainable and supportive for your body.

Listening to Your Body Above All Else

Perhaps the most important takeaway is this: your body knows best.

I recently tried a cleanse that left me feeling exhausted, weak, and constantly hungry—even though I was following it exactly as designed. Instead of pushing through, I adjusted. I added in a daily snack, and when it still didn’t feel right, I chose to stop after three days.

And that was okay.

I continued using the juices as supportive snacks while returning to a more balanced way of eating. In doing so, I still honored my intention to care for my body—just in a way that truly worked for me.

A More Balanced Approach to Cleansing

Cleanses don’t have to be all-or-nothing. They can be gentle, supportive, and adaptable. When approached with awareness and aligned with your body’s needs, they can absolutely be a helpful tool.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s connection. When you learn to listen to your body, honor the seasons, and nourish yourself along the way, you create a foundation for lasting health that goes far beyond any cleanse.
